About Me

My journey into medicine started in my 20’s, and like so many of us, in the back of an ambulance.

I always felt somewhat drawn to a career helping people.  And so, “way back when” I trained and became certified as an EMT-Paramedic.  I loved the excitement of the lights and sirens, and the adrenaline rush of the notorious “priority one – unknown man down” calls that would come across our Medic 19 radio from dispatch.  However, my curious nature craved a bit more of an in-depth examination of the human body.

So, I bridged my EMS education into an associate’s degree in nursing, and placed my Dansko clogs proverbially into the well-trod footsteps of Flo Nightengale.  I threw myself into the fire of critical care nursing in the coronary ICU at a certain well-known hospital in Cleveland, OH.  For three years, I fought and advocated for my incredibly ill patients as they faced their very worst days head-on.

You’d think that would satisfy a person…fill his professional cup, eh?  No.  It turned out I was a glutton for intellectual punishment and humble pie.  I decided to apply to a very intense nurse anesthesiology in my mid-30’s.  Once accepted (barely), I went into some (much) debt and started the arduous, one-foot-in-front-of-the-other-wait-I-tripped-and-fell journey of a nurse anesthetist student.  By some rift in the space-time continuum, I completed the program and passed my boards.

Today, I’m a practicing Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) who discovered a passion for taking what happens in the operating room and translating it into words patients can actually understand and trust.

I’ve been at this nursing thing for 20 years, and this anesthesia gig for a decade plus.  Every day I still start IVs, place spinals and ultrasound-guided blocks, manage airways, and bring patients safely through surgery.

However, when I’m not in the OR, I write.  I’ve been a writer since…well…forever.  Professionally, I write the blogs, patient guides, social posts, and website content that help people walk into their procedure less afraid and more informed.  Non-professionally I write about my failures and successes as a dad, a husband and a fly fisherman.

What I bring that most writers can’t:

  • Real-time clinical experience (I still take overnight call and run my own rooms)
  • A knack for turning complex anesthesia topics into plain-language stories that get shared, bookmarked, and read to the end
  • Zero inaccuracies – because I live the material I write

You’ll find my bylines on hospital and surgery-center blogs, device-company patient education portals, AANA and ASA public-facing sites, and consumer health publications. I write the “What to Expect from Anesthesia” guides that patients actually read the night before surgery, the Instagram reels that calm first-time moms before a C-section, and the blog series that help private anesthesia groups stand out online.

If you need anesthesia or perioperative content that is:

  • 100 % clinically correct
  • Written in a warm, human voice
  • Designed to rank on Google and reassure patients

…let’s talk. I’d love to help your hospital, surgery center, device brand, or publisher sound like the calm, confident expert patients are looking for.

Open to new projects, collaborations, and coffee chats about regional anesthesia, ERAS, or – perhaps the question we most hear – why patients still think they’ll wake up during surgery (they won’t until I want them to!).

I’m also open to working with you on non-anesthesia topics in healthcare.

Drop me a message – I answer fast (unless I’m in an operating room putting someone to sleep).

Subject-matter expertise isn’t a nice-to-have in medical writing—it’s the difference between content patients trust and content they close in five seconds.

A writer who has never started an IV or managed an airway can parrot facts, but they’ll miss those real questions patients actually ask at 2 a.m. before surgery: “Will I feel the breathing tube?” “Can I still breastfeed after anesthesia?” “Why does my throat hurt afterward?” Only someone who’s stood at the head of the OR table hundreds of times can answer those questions with clinical accuracy and the calm, human voice that turns fear into confidence. Expertise doesn’t just prevent errors; it builds credibility, boosts engagement, and ultimately helps patients show up for their procedures less anxious and better informed. In healthcare communication, lived experience is the ultimate competitive advantage.
